Contractors evaluating commercial floor removal equipment are often weighing two options: a dedicated ride-on floor scraper or a skid steer attachment. This is an honest comparison of both — where each wins, where each loses, and who should buy what.

What We're Actually Comparing

The ride-on floor scraper market includes well-known machines from Bartell Global (Innovatech Terminator), National Flooring Equipment, BlastPro, OEM Products, and Husqvarna (formerly Blastrac). These are purpose-built, self-propelled machines ranging from roughly 1,600 lbs to over 5,000 lbs, priced between $35,000 and $80,000 USD or more. They are serious pieces of equipment with legitimate capabilities.

The XDS's advantage here is the combination of its own weight plus the weight and hydraulic force of the skid steer working behind it. The three-year cost gap is significant. Beyond purchase price, the transport, maintenance, and storage costs associated with a dedicated ride-on scraper add up over a full season. Where Ride-Ons Make Sense

Ride-on floor scrapers are well suited to environments where a skid steer simply isn't practical. Their compact size allows them to work in tight interior spaces, pass through standard doorways, and operate in buildings where access is limited.

Electric and battery-powered ride-ons also make sense on projects where emissions regulations or site requirements prohibit diesel-powered equipment indoors. For flooring contractors working primarily in finished commercial interiors, these factors can make a dedicated ride-on the more practical option.

For extremely large outdoor removal projects, specialized machines like the National Flooring Viking are also purpose-built for high-volume work. However, with a price tag of approximately $163,000, these machines represent a significant investment compared with the XDS at $13,900.

For contractors who already have access to a skid steer and work in areas where the machine can operate, the XDS offers a compelling combination of production, versatility, and lower equipment cost.

Operator Experience and Fatigue

Both the ride-on scraper and the skid steer with XDS are seated, however, the operator experience is very different. On a typical ride-on floor scraper, the operator sits in a compact, crouched position directly over the blade and work area. In a skid steer equipped with the XDS, the operator sits comfortably in a full-size cab, with an ergonomic seat and, on many machines, heating and air conditioning. For long removal shifts, especially in hot, cold, or demanding environments, this can make a significant difference in operator comfort and fatigue.

Where experience differs is in the learning curve. A skid steer operator who already knows their machine adapts to the XDS quickly — blade selection, head choice, and operating technique are all that needs to be learned. A dedicated ride-on floor scraper makes sense for a specialist flooring contractor doing high-volume floor prep as their primary business, operating in markets where skid steer mobilization is impractical, and who can justify the capital outlay and ongoing costs of a specialized machine.

For everyone else — the waterproofing contractor pulling membranes from a parking deck, the restoration company doing commercial reno, the GC adding floor removal to their scope — the XDS delivers more production, lower cost, and less overhead than any ride-on on the market.
